The Late Peter Feeley
There was shock and sadness in the Club and in the wider Community at the news of the sad and sudden death of Peter Feeley, Moniengaugagh, Glenade.
Peter was a very popular player with the Gaels before going off to work in England. He was always a great supporter of Melvin Gaels and of Leitrim down the years. He was there to celebrate on October the 4th, 1998 when the Gaels beat hot favourites Sean O’Heslins to win the Senior Final. Last year, fourteen years later, almost to the day, October the 7th, Peter was back again in Pairc Sean, to see his beloved Gaels beat four in a row winners Glencar/Manorhamilton to win the Senior Final again. This time Peter was even more delighted because his nephew, Stephen Clancy, played a great game for the Gaels. He was a proud man at the final whistle and his broad smile said it all.
Deepest Sympathy is extended to his sister, Mary Clancy, brothers, Con, Pat and Martin and all his many relatives and many friends.
May He Rest in Peace.
Good Luck Leitrim
The Club would like to wish good luck to all the Leitrim Team and management in the game in New York at the weekend.

Senior League v Gortletterragh
The Seniors had a good win over Gortletterragh on Sunday in Melvin Park .The game was played in terrible weather conditions. Both sides found scores hard to come by. The Gaels played against the wind and after a shaky start when they conceded two goals the held the ball and scored three points. The home side trailed by five points at the break and then took control in the second half with the storm behind them. A great goal from Paul Brennan put the Gaels in front, but it took a brilliant double save from goalkeeper, Peter Reilly, late in the game to ensure the two points went to the home side. Final Score was Melvin Gaels 1-8, Gortletteragh 2-2.
Division 3 League v Eslin
Despite a brave effort the Junior team were narrowly beaten by Eslin in a game directly after the Senior game. Because of injuries and players not available, a number of players who lined out for the seniors took the field again for the juniors. Nevertheless had they been able to take the scores created in the second half they would have won the game. Well done to all the players and management who performed so well in both games.
Games coming up
On Saturday next the Juniors travel to Glencar Manorhamilton for a Division 3 game at 7pm and on Sunday the Senior team travel to Carrick on Shannon for a Senior League game against St Marys at 1.30pm.
Good Luck to all the players and management.

Senior League v Mohill
On Easter Monday the senior team travelled to Mohill and new manager Gerry Mullaney was rewarded with a win in his first competitive game in charge. This was an entertaining match against a strong Mohill side with the home team going in at half time 5 points up. The Gaels had a lot to do in the second half playing against the wind but a patient passing game saw the team get the scores that drew them closer to Mohill. The decisive moment of the game was a well taken Tom Lipsett goal that involved 15 passes. The final score was Mohill 2-06, Melvin Gaels 1-11.Team: Peter O’Reilly, Stephen Clancy, Fabian McMorrow, Sean Gallagher, Shane Ryan, Keith McGloin, Donal Clancy, Stephen McGurrin, BB Brennan, Jonnie Connolly, Paul Brennan, James Bredin, Peter McGowan, Tom Lipsett, and Patrick McGowan

Bord na nOg Failte Isteach
Melvin Gaels Bord na nOg held an Open Day on Saturday 2nd March from 10.30am to 12.30pm. The theme of the event was “Failte Isteach” with the emphasis placed on inclusion. An invitation via local newspapers was issued to all members of the surrounding community to come and visit our club facility and meet club members and players. Special effort was made in the lead up to this event by our club chairperson David Gillespie and coaching officer, Pat Gallagher, who visited all the schools in the area to advertise the Open Day. The purpose of the day was to encourage people from the community to learn more about their local GAA club. The focus was on welcoming those who may be new to the area and who may not have had involvement with Melvin Gaels in the past.
We were blessed with a dry, bright day at Melvin Park which helped ensure that families turned up in large numbers to enjoy the organised activities. Eight members of the winning Melvin Gaels County championship team were on hand to provide coaching and share tips as they guided the children through a variety of football drills and skills, culminating in football games based on the Go Games model.

While all the fun was going on outside, parents were welcomed indoors for a cup of tea and a chat. Bord na nOg chairperson David Gillespie gave a brief talk to parents covering issues such as the club code of behaviour, mandatory wearing of mouthguards for all underage players, and the importance of parental involvement in children’s sporting activities. David placed great emphasis on the fact that fun is the main objective when coaching children in the basic skills of Gaelic football. Daniel Branley spoke about the issue of Child Protection in children’s sport. Jenny Mc Gloin has recently been appointed as the club’s Child Protection Officer. In all 135 children were registered to play football for the forthcoming season. Under 6 – Under 12 age groups will begin training on Saturday 6th April at 10.30am.
Members of the Gaelic4mothers and Others team were present to promote this recreational initiative. This programme focuses on teaching the basic skills of Gaelic football to women who have never played before. Melvin Gaels is the only club in Co. Leitrim running Gaelic4mothers and Others. This programme has gone from strength to strength and is now in its third year. We signed up fifteen new women on the day, leading to a total of 45 women registered as participants in the Gaelic4mothers and Others programme.
At the close of activities, parents and children were treated to a fine display of football between Garadice Gaels and Melvin Gaels minor teams.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who contributed to the success of the day, especially those players and members of the Senior Board who gave so generously of their time.

Senior League
The Senior League got under way in Melvin Park on Sunday when the Gaels took on Dromahair in the first Senior League game of 2013.
Despite a number of players missing through injury, the Gaels played some great football in the first half of the game, and went into the break two points ahead. In the second half with the wind behind them the Gaels failed to match the first half performance and missed a number of scoring chances, hitting the crossbar in the process. Credit to Dromahaire they made better use of the chances they had and finished a point ahead. Thanks to the Dromahaire team for applauding the Melvin Gaels team on to the pitch in recognition of winning the Senior Championship in 2012.
Next up for the seniors is a home game against Glencar/Manorhamilton on Sunday next.
