Melvin Gaels Golden Jubilee Celebrations
On Sunday August 2nd, the community of Kinlough stepped back in time with the Melvin Gaels Golden Jubilee celebrations. The evening began with Fr. Keogan arriving on pony and trap to celebrate Mass, with members of the honoured 1959 team participating in the readings and offertory gifts. After Mass, a large crowd gathered round to hear a fitting speech by Mr. Pauric White at the unveiling of the plaque dedicated to Gerald Gilmartin, honouring his donation for the training field. This was followed by an entertaining re-enactment of the 1959 county final by a first class Kinlough side who thankfully won out again against Ballinamore! Following the game, the hungry players and spectators were greeted in the community centre by the smell of homemade bread and scones which was served to all with a welcome cup of tea while Seamus Sweeney, Eileen Kane & Lydia Warnock entertained with some excellent traditional music.

Thanks to Noel McGowan, Spar, Kinlough, the 1959 County Finalists and committee were treated to a sit down meal where many a story was recounted! The highlight of the evening was a comical sketch of the Club’s first meeting in 1954, adapted by Patsy McGovern. Well done to the actors and actress who gave a very fine performance to a packed hall. The evening ended with excellent traditional music from Seamus McGowan and members of local Ceoltas group and dancers from the Emerald Revellers.

Thanks to all who embraced the spirit of the occasion and dressed as in the 50’s and congratulations to Nora McGloin, who won best dressed lady sponsored by the newly opened Arroo Hair Group, Kinlough and Colin Regan, who was chosen as the best dressed gentleman, sponsored by F&F Construction, judge on the day was Clem Prendergast. Thanks also to our other sponsors, B&M DIY Manorhamilton, Edel Hegarty Hair Salon, Creevykeel and Joe & Edel McCarron for supplying raffle prizes and to all those who made the wonderful homemade bread and to the ladies who served it.

Championship Starts
The seniors got a draw against Allen Gaels on Saturday evening in Pairc Sean in the first of their games in the 2009 Championship.

Melvin Gaels played a first half in this game that they will want to forget quickly.

The team looked nervous and Allen Gaels took full advantage and went into the break leading by seven points. 2-3 to 0-2. The Gaels scored another ‘point’ which was first given and then taken away. This looked a good score to many.

In the second half Melvin Gaels looked much better and got an early goal from Gareth Phelan and the game then became much more of a contest.

Going into the last few minutes Allen Gaels were leading by four points and looked odds on to win. The Melvin Gaels got a point to leave only a goal in it with many north Leitrim supporters heading for the gate . Then Paul Og Ferguson scored a goal, after a fantastic piece of play, that will be remembered for a long time and left the Melvin Gaels supporters heading home happy, with a draw that appeared very unlikely at half time.

It was a great team performance in the second half, well done to all.

The final score was Melvin Gaels 2-7 Allen Gaels 2-7.

The seniors have no game this weekend, but the Juniors start their campaign next Monday at 2pm in Leitrim Village when they take on Bornacoola.

League Game v St. Marys

The Seniors took on St. Marys in Melvin Park on Saturday evening and secured a badly needed win

This game was played in terrible conditions with constant rain and strong wind blowing.

Scores were hard to come by and both teams found it hard going .In the first half both teams had two scores each, but the Gaels got a well worked goal fisted to the net by Daniel Branley and a good point from Stephen McGurran. The half time score was Melvin Gaels 1-1 St. Marys 0-2.

In the second half the Gaels seemed to cope better with the conditions and thanks to some excellent free taking from Conor Sheridan they secured a deserved win.

Next up for the Gaels is another senior league game against Gortletterragh on Saturday evening at 6.30pm.

Understandably there was a very small crowd at the St Marys game hopefully there will be a big crowd and the sun shines next Saturday.

Good Luck Marcus

Melvin Gaels would like to wish every health and happiness to Garda Marcus Mulligan who retired recently from An Garda Siochana having been stationed in Kinlough and involved with the club for many years.
