Under 14 Final
No joy for the Under 14s in the Final last Friday. It was a great achievement by this very young team to reach the Final. Well done to all concerned.
Junior Championship
The Juniors had a great win in Pairc Sean last Saturday evening against Bornacoola. Against all the odds, they produced a great team performance to win by nine points.
At half time they looked out of the championship, when they went in a point down. In the second half they played some great football and scored some great points to win comfortably in the end. Well done to all.
Relegation Game
On Sunday the Seniors take on Drumreilly at 5.30pm in Drumshanbo in a relegation game. Good luck to all involved.

Div 4 Match report – Annaduff v Melvin Gaels
Jun 29th
The Melvin Gaels junior team recorded a 2-11 to 2-7 victory over Annaduff in a game where few expected a win was possible. Struggling to muster a team together, the Gaels set out on the long drive on Sunday morning with the bare fifteen that included injured and Sea Sessioned men!
Played in changeable conditions, the Gaels opened the scoring with a Jonathon Connolly free in what was a balanced opening ten minutes. Annaduff took control of the game early in the first half and hit an unanswered 2-4 in a fifteen minute spell. This did not affect the Gaels resolve as the midfield pairing of Pat Gallagher and Michael Tiffoney worked immensely hard to gain possession throughout the half and worked the ball into a forward line that was hungry for scores. Roper, Connolly, McGuinness, the workhorse Clancy and Kilkenny constantly showed for ball however the Gael’s conversion rate was low in the first half due to a lack of inter-play between the forwards. Nonetheless, the Gaels walked in at half time having put 5 points on the score board to Annaduff’s 2-5. The highlight of the first half was a long run from defence by Blaine Mulligan which ended in a fine point, a statement of intent by the Gaels captain. The other scores in the half came from Roper, Tiffoney and Connolly (0-2).
With a strong team spirit the Gaels emerged as a different team in the second half. The opening ten minutes saw the Gaels midfield dominate the centre of the park with Tiffoney sending in long probing passes into a forward line who were now working hard off each other. A series of quick attacks involving good interplay saw the Gaels hit an unanswered 2-3 with goals from McGuiness and Kilkenny and points from Connolly, Kilkenny and O’Reilly. Annaduff worked hard to get back into the match but were restricted to 2 points by a hard working Gaels defence and forward line that hassled the Annaduff defence every time they tried to break forward. The Gaels saw out what was a sporting game with another fine Connolly point and 2 more points from O’Reilly.
The win bodes well for the Junior team’s championship ambitions in August. What was evident on Sunday and what has been a trait of this team all season is the fine team spirit amongst the lads and the collective resolve to stand together in the face of adversity.
Team and scorers as follows: Shane Ryan, Sean Kilkenny, Bernard McGowan, Sean Lipsett, Blaine Mulligan (c) (0-1), Matthew McGloin, Patrick McGowan, Michael Tiffoney (0-1), Pat Gallagher, Donal Clancy, Jesse McGuinness (1-0), Declan Roper (0-1), Patrick Kilkenny (1-1), Peter O’Reilly (0-3), Jonathon Connolly (0-4)

Senior Game v Drumreilly
The Seniors had a good win over Drumreilly in Melvin Park on Saturday evening.
The game was played in ideal conditions and there was some good football played by both teams.
The first half was very even with Drumreilly going two points ahead before the Gaels got going with a point from Fabian Mc Morrow. Pat Gallagher added another point to draw level and Joe Tiffoney scored a very good point but had to go off injured soon after. Good to see Joe back again. Drumreilly came back with two mare scores , the Gaels went two points ahead at the break with two frees from David Mc Sharry and a great point from Sub, Jonathon Connolly.
The Gaels played the better football in the second half and good scores from BB Brennan, Jonathon Connolly and David Mc Sharry put the Gaels in control and when young Declan Roper scored a very good goal there was no doubt about the result.
Drumreilly had a couple of goal chances near the end but the Gaels finished strongly.
Final score was Melvin Gaels 1-13 Drumreilly 0-6.
The Melvin Gaels team and scorers was: Gareth Phelan, Colm Mc Gowan, James Phelan, Shane Ryan, Fabian Mc Morrow (0-1), Conor Sheridan, Paul Mc Gurran, Martin Mc Carron, BB Brennan (0-1), Joe Mc Gowan, David Mc Sharry (0-4, 2 frees), Pat Gallagher (0-1), Joe Tiffoney (0-1), Daniel Branley (0-2), Declan Roper (1-0).
Subs: Jonathon Connolly(0-2) for Joe Tiffoney, Stephen Clancy (0-1) for Shane Ryan, Peter Mc Gowan, Tom Lipsett, Patrick Mc Gowan, Paul Simpson, Blaine Mulligan and Fergal Gallagher.
This was a good team performance from the Gaels. Well done to all.

Junior Game v Aughnasheelin
Melvin Gaels juniors had a fantastic win away from home over Aughnasheelin, in what were perfect conditions over the weekend. The first half was a one sided affair with the Gaels working extremely hard to win every ball and playing at a high tempo. The away side were relentless in their approach and led 1-9 to 0-1 at half time. Highlights of the first half were a sublime Pat Gallagher point from the right wing, a superbly taken goal by Fergal Gallagher and two 45′s from goalkeeper Paul Rooney!
Aughnasheelin responded well to their management’s half-time talk and really tested the Gaels in the third quarter, scoring three unanswered points after the break. Anthony Tiffoney scored a crucial point with fifteen minutes remaining to settle the Gaels and this was the spring board for the away side to re-establish their dominance on the game. Paul Simpson scored three points and two more frees from Paul Rooney closed the game out with a convincing victory for Melvin Gaels.
This was a great team performance from Melvin Gaels and every player was outstanding. Eight of the starting fifteen scored on the day and it bodes well for the future of the club that ten of the points came from three players that are under 21 years of age, Jonathon Connolly (0-1), Paul Rooney (0-4) and Paul Simpson (0‑5).
Melvin Gaels: Paul Rooney (0-4), Dermot Clancy, Matthew McGloin, Shane Ryan, Anthony Tiffoney (0-1), Blaine Mulligan (captain, 0-1), Patrick McGowan, Bernard McGowan, Pat Gallagher (0-2), Donal Clancy, Joe McGowan, Jonathon Connolly (0‑1), Paul Simpson (0-5), Fergal Gallagher (1-1), Damien Sheridan
Subs used: Tom Lispett for Anthony Tiffoney, Peter O’Reilly for Jonathon Connolly

Memorable Trip To Croke Park
Last Thursday was an historic day Melvin Gaels GAA Club when the under 12 teams competed in the “ Play and Stay” competition at Croke Park. The teams playing on the day were all from Connacht. The club fielded two nine a side teams. The players, mentors and spectators were hugely impressed by the organisation of the competition and the state of the art facilities now available at this historic stadium. The players however were not overawed by the occasion. They played six games in all and won five which augers well for the future of this team. Afterwards they were provided with lunch and then given a guided tour of Croke Park with the guide providing information on the history of Croke Park and the vast amounts spent on making it one of the finest stadiums in the world. While the winning of the games was encouraging the overall theme of the games was enjoyment and an opportunity for all the competing young people to relish this special occasion. The day will be remembered forever by all concerned. Special thanks to Thomas Keenan and Jimmy Holohan from the Leitrim County Board Coiste Na Nog coaching committee, to Melvin Gaels Senior Board, and to the mentors, parents and supporters and finally to our young team of whom our Club and Parish can be justifiably proud.
Team 1: – Leo Ryan, Darragh Rooney, Keith Lynch, Owen Hill, Cathal McSharry, Rory McDonagh, Killian McManus and Pauric Sheridan.

Senior Game v St. Marys
Saturday was a day that Melvin Gaels senior team will want to forget as soon as possible. They were beaten comprehensively by a St. Marys team who were much better on the day. The Gaels lined out with a large number of players missing, eight in total, from the 2009 first team, but this was no excuse for such a poor performance.
Too many players failed to perform and hopefully this was just an ‘off day’.
We know they are capable of much better than this and that they will soon put matters right.
Junior Game v Carrigallen
The Gaels travelled to Carrigallen for the opening game of the league. This was always going to be a difficult encounter and it proved so with the Gaels trailing 8 points to a Gareth Foley point at half time. A big response was required and the lads dug deep in the second half and give a spirited performance. 3 points from Gareth Foley and 1 from Fergal Gallagher saw the gap closed to 5 points half way through the second half. Carrigallen proceeded to score another goal and a point in the closing stages to finish the score 1-12 to 5 points. Team: Paul Rooney, Shane Ryan, Jonathon Connolly, Matthew McGloin, Fergal Gallagher (0-1), Blaine Mulligan (captain), Patrick McGowan, Bernard McGowan, Peter McGowan, Joe McGowan, Dermot Clancy, Donal Clancy, Damian Sheridan, Paul Simpson, Seamus Gallagher. Subs used: Gareth Foley (0-4) for Paul Simpson, Andrew McGowan for Peter McGowan, Sean Lipsett for Seamus Gallagher and Peter O’Reilly for Damian Sheridan.
