Bord na nOg Failte Isteach
Melvin Gaels Bord na nOg held an Open Day on Saturday 2nd March from 10.30am to 12.30pm. The theme of the event was “Failte Isteach” with the emphasis placed on inclusion. An invitation via local newspapers was issued to all members of the surrounding community to come and visit our club facility and meet club members and players. Special effort was made in the lead up to this event by our club chairperson David Gillespie and coaching officer, Pat Gallagher, who visited all the schools in the area to advertise the Open Day. The purpose of the day was to encourage people from the community to learn more about their local GAA club. The focus was on welcoming those who may be new to the area and who may not have had involvement with Melvin Gaels in the past.

We were blessed with a dry, bright day at Melvin Park which helped ensure that families turned up in large numbers to enjoy the organised activities. Eight members of the winning Melvin Gaels County championship team were on hand to provide coaching and share tips as they guided the children through a variety of football drills and skills, culminating in football games based on the Go Games model.

While all the fun was going on outside, parents were welcomed indoors for a cup of tea and a chat. Bord na nOg chairperson David Gillespie gave a brief talk to parents covering issues such as the club code of behaviour, mandatory wearing of mouthguards for all underage players, and the importance of parental involvement in children’s sporting activities. David placed great emphasis on the fact that fun is the main objective when coaching children in the basic skills of Gaelic football. Daniel Branley spoke about the issue of Child Protection in children’s sport. Jenny Mc Gloin has recently been appointed as the club’s Child Protection Officer. In all 135 children were registered to play football for the forthcoming season. Under 6 – Under 12 age groups will begin training on Saturday 6th April at 10.30am.

Members of the Gaelic4mothers and Others team were present to promote this recreational initiative. This programme focuses on teaching the basic skills of Gaelic football to women who have never played before. Melvin Gaels is the only club in Co. Leitrim running Gaelic4mothers and Others. This programme has gone from strength to strength and is now in its third year. We signed up fifteen new women on the day, leading to a total of 45 women registered as participants in the Gaelic4mothers and Others programme.

At the close of activities, parents and children were treated to a fine display of football between Garadice Gaels and Melvin Gaels minor teams.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who contributed to the success of the day, especially those players and members of the Senior Board who gave so generously of their time.

Cycle Run – A Great Success

On Sunday 17th February, Melvin Gaels held the inaugural ‘Tour De Melvin’, a fun cycle around the famous North Leitrim lake, in aid of the Lydia Branley Trust Fund and the Melvin Gaels Player Injury Fund.

Over 120 competitors eagerly participated on what was fortunately a beautiful, crisp spring morning. All who took part thoroughly enjoyed it and agreed that it should become an annual event.

The huge success of the cycle is owed, firstly to the competitors, but also to the sponsors; Noel McGowan Spar, Shane Gallagher Drowes Salmon Fishery, BMG Hardware Bundoran, Simpsons Kinlough, The Courthouse Restaurant, Al Connolly Butchers and Teds Bike Shop Donegal Town, to all those who collected sponsorship and those who gave very generously to the cause, and to those who provided refreshments on the day.

To date €1000 has been raised for each cause and we hope to maintain the success of this event for years to come.

Good Luck to the Leitrim Lads
The Club would like to wish the Leitrim team and mentors good luck in the game against Wicklow on Saturday evening.

Good Luck to the Gaels lads, Paul, Emlyn, Conor and Fabian.

A Lot of Football at the weekend
For reasons that are difficult to understand, the Club had to play a Division 3 game on Friday , another Division 3 game on Saturday and a Shield game on Sunday. With about forty adult players available to the Club and four of these ineligible due to Senior County commitments, not counting injuries, it was always going to be difficult.

Nevertheless great credit must go to the players who put in such a great effort and a good few played in all three games.

On Friday evening the second team travelled to Carrick on Shannon and came away with well very deserved draw against St Marys, Final Score was St Marys 2-05, Melvin Gaels 1-08.

On Saturday evening they made another long trip to Balinamore and suffered a narrow defeat to Sean O Heslins. Final score Sean O Heslins, 1-09, Melvin Gaels 0-10. Melvin Gaels played the whole second half of this game with fourteen players after a player got two yellow cards in the first half.

On Sunday at 1.30pm the Shield game against Aughawillan took place in Melvin Park. The Gaels got a deserved victory in this game on a final score of Melvin Gaels 2-11, Aughawillan 1-08. The Gaels had to finish this game with fourteen players, not because they had a player sent off but because they suffered injuries to players and had used all substitutes.

The Club would like to thank all players who turned out for all three games and, although some were barely able to walk at half three on Sunday, they did not complain.

With mass emigration, player burn out, and competition with other sports it’s hard to see how the events of last weekend can help.

Believe it or not there is no adult game scheduled for this weekend!

Minor League Final
The final last Wednesday evening turned out to be one of the best games of the year so far. The large crowd of supporters from Kinlough were disappointed with the result but very proud of the performance that these young players produced. This was a game that the Gaels could and probably should have won, having led by seven points with about ten minutes of normal time to go. The confusion and delay concerning the score at the end of normal time did not help either team going into extra time. It’s hard to understand why the scoreboard was not in use for this final.

Nevertheless, well done to Liam, Fergal and all the young lads. No doubt these lads will compete in many more finals in the years ahead

Championship Begins
The Intermediate Championship begins next Sunday when the Gaels take on Ballinaglera in the first game round of Group Three.

This game is in Pairc Sean at 2pm.

Good luck to Billy, Brian and all the lads.

League Game v Drumreilly
On Saturday evening the Gaels recorded a five point win over Drumreilly in the senior league.

This game was played in terrible conditions and it was difficult to play any good football.

Final score was Melvin Gaels 1-8, Drumreilly 0-6.

Thanks
The Club would like to thank Dympna and Simon Foley of SDF Developments who sponsored footballs for the team.

Cake Sale
Melvin Gaels Bord na nOg are holding a Cake sale on Saturday 23rd July after 7pm mass and on Sunday 24th July after 11.00am. Mass. There will be lots of delicious home baking on sale.
