League Game v Allen Gaels
On Sunday the Second team took on Allen Gaels in a Division 3 League game in Melvin Park. After the Patrick’s day celebrations it was obvious that neither team was at their best, but both fought hard and produced spells of good football. The Kinlough Gaels had a number of young players starting at this level and they performed well. Both teams were guilty of some glaring misses but the Gaels were worthy winners in the end.

The final score was Melvin Gaels 1-8, Allen Gaels 0-5.

Well done to all.

Tractor Parades on St Patrick’s Day

There was a large crowd at the Community Centre on St Patrick’s Day when the newly restored 1962 Massey Ferguson Tractor was unveiled. The tractor was decorated in the Club colours and took part in the parades at Ballyshannon, Bundoran and Manorhamilton.

The group of local volunteers started this restoration on January 9, 2012 and in record time completed their work on Friday night last. This was a remarkable achievement considering they worked on the tractor two or three nights each week and stripped it down and completely restored it.

A special word of thanks to the workers and to all the sponsors who made this possible.

Tickets for the raffle for the tractor, which takes place at a dance in the Allingham Hotel, Bundoran on October 12 now go on sale at €5 each or five for €20. These tickets are on sale locally and will soon be available here on the Melvin Gaels website http://www.melvingaels.com

Junior League v Allen Gaels
Melvin Gaels juniors had a fantastic 3-8 to 0-8 away win in Division 4 over Allen Gaels on Sunday, in what were perfect conditions on a fine pitch in Drumshanbo.

The first half was a one sided affair with the North Leitrim Gaels working extremely hard to win every ball and playing at a high tempo. The away side was relentless in their approach and led 2-6 to 0-3 at half time with the scores coming from Jonathan Connolly (0-1), Peter McGowan (1-1), Gareth Foley (0-2), Tom Lipsett (0-1) and Declan Roper (0-1). The first goal came from a long Pat Gallagher ball into the square that came of a defender and into the net. Peter McGowan was unlucky not to have a second goal in the half after one of his efforts was ruled out as a square ball.

The second half was a more even affair with both side registering 5 points each. Melvin Gael’s scores in this half came from Peter (1-1) and his brother Joe McGowan (0-1).

This was a great team performance by Melvin Gaels with all players from the keeper to the full forward line performing extremely well. Management and supporters will be delighted with the players’ efforts as they have taken 3 out of a possible 4 points in the opening two games, and as all forwards scored on the day, so well done lads.

Senior Game v Allen Gaels
The seniors took on Allen Gaels on Sunday afternoon in Melvin Park and shared the points. This turned out to be a very entertaining game and the result was in doubt until the final whistle.

Allen Gaels went into a four point lead after ten minutes, scoring a goal and a point before Melvin Gaels woke up. Melvin Gaels then got their act together and two points each from David Mc Sharry and Thomas Lipsett brought the home side level a point each from Conor Sheridan and BB Brennan meant Melvin Gaels went into the break leading by two points.

In the second half the Gaels from South Leitrim playing with the advantage of a strong breeze cam back and leveled again. Conor Sheridan and BB Brennan again scored a point each but Allen Gaels kept on level terms until a good point from Daniel Branley put the home side ahead.

Both sides missed a number of chances during the game, and both will feel they could have won it.

Nine wides from Melvin Gaels in the first half is not good enough, but seeing as they scored all their nine points from play, it was a much improved performance since their outing against St Marys a few weeks ago.

Final score Melvin Gaels 0-9, Allen Gaels 1-6.

Junior Game v Allen Gaels
A lively crowd turned up to Melvin Park to weather breezy conditions for second game of the Division 4 league against Allen Gaels. Melvin Gaels got off to a great start early on with a point from Patrick Kilkenny and a goal from Fergal Gallagher. Paul Rooney stepped out of goals to fire home a 45 mid way through the half, something not seen too often in football! Captain Blaine Mulligan and Damien Sheridan scored points to close out the first half with the Melvin Gaels leading 1-5 to 0-5.

The second half was a tight affair with the Allen Gaels pushing the Melvin Gaels all the way. A great save by Paul Rooney early in the half saw the lead maintained. Fergal Gallagher added another goal in the second half and was unlucky not to score a third, only to see his third shot on goal saved well by the Allen Gaels keeper. Melvin Gaels went further ahead with Anthony Tiffoney scoring a great long range point and keeper Paul Rooney scoring another fine 45!

Colm McGowan put the Melvin Gaels 3 points in front with minutes to go with a great point from the right wing; however a lack of concentration in the Melvin Gaels full back line saw Allen Gaels score an equalising goal. Melvin Gaels went one behind in the closing stages, but they dug deep and man of the match Fergal Gallagher stepped up with a point to seal a draw. The final score was Melvin Gaels 2-8, Allen Gaels 1-11.

Overall, this was a very strong team performance by the Gaels and the lads stood tall after their heavy defeat in game one. The Gaels will need to play even better next time as a tough task awaits the team with an away game against a strong Aughnasheelin.

Best for the Melvin Gaels on the day were Paul Rooney, Matthew McGloin, Pat Gallagher, Anthony Tiffoney and Fergal Gallagher.

Team: Paul Rooney(0-2(45′s)), Sean Kilkenny, Matthew McGloin, Jonathon Connolly, Dermot Clancy, Blaine Mulligan (captain) (0-1), Patrick McGowan, Bernard McGowan, Pat Gallagher, Anthony Tiffoney (0-1), Patrick Kilkenny (0-1), Donal Clancy, Andrew McGowan, Damian Sheridan (0-1), Fergal Gallagher (2-1)
