GAA Press Release 22.11.2011 – ASAP Programme
0The GAA issued an exciting new health challenge to its members at the launch of ‘Off the Booze and On the Ball’ in Croke Park on Tuesday, November 22.
This fun challenge with a healthy twist invites participants to abstain from alcohol for the month of January and in doing so seek sponsorship to go towards their local GAA club. Participants are also encouraged to engage in some new exercises that help them reach their recommended weekly activity levels during the month, and hopefully throughout 2012.
The challenge was extended personally by Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael, Criostóir Ó Cuana, who launched the event with Minister of State at the Department of Health, Róisín Shortall. The initiative is being driven by the Association’s Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) Programme – a joint initiative with the HSE that aims to reduce the harm caused by the misuse of alcohol and other substances.
“January is a month of the year when the commencement of good habits comes into sharp focus and twinning a reduction in alcohol intake with increased physical activity makes perfect sense after the possible excesses of the festive season,” said the President of the GAA. “This scheme also offers members the chance to generate funds for their local clubs through sponsorship so the benefits for those involved are plain for all to see.”
Minister Shortall added “The history of the GAA, from a small organisation which grew from a meeting in a hotel in 1884 to the huge Association it now is with a presence in every community can be a metaphor for what we are launching here today. Everything begins with small steps and I am confident that this programme will find its way into every club, every community and every county in Ireland. Alcohol abuse presents one of the greatest challenges our country faces and I am delighted to see an organisation as renowned and respected as the GAA take a lead on this issue and I hope other sporting associations will adopt similar schemes”
Crossmaglen’s Oisín McConville and Mayo’s Aidan O’Shea and Alan Freeman were on-hand to support the launch, as were members of the Melvin Gaels club, Leitrim Intermediate champions 2010. Their senior panel is going ‘Off the Booze and On the Ball’ come January.
“It’s a good way to kick start the New Year and it gives the lads a challenge to engage in together,” explains their manager Billy Gavigan. “We’re back in senior championship in 2011 and for the first time the squad is engaging in a strength and conditioning programme in January to complete the activity side of the challenge.”
Club Treasurer Joe McCarron added that any money raised by the players would be a welcome boost to the club. “Fundraising is becoming more and more challenging and new, interesting ideas are always welcome.”
Individuals and panel members can sign up at www.gaa.ie/asap where they will receive a sponsorship card and an information pack containing details on health, exercise and diet. Further information is also available from respective County ASAP Officers. All participating clubs will be in with a chance to win a training session with one of Ireland’s leading high performance coaches or one of the country’s leading sports nutritionists in 2012.
Off the Booze & On the Ball, which is endorsed and supported by the GPA, fully supports the RSA’s road safety message and the Ulster Council’s ‘Live to Play’ programme and participants are encouraged to make themselves available as a designated driver for friends or family during their month of abstinence.
There are some images from the launch below and there are additional images available on the Sportsfile website.

0Division Four League Final
The Division Four League Final versus St Marys has been rearranged for 3pm on Saturday next.
Good Luck to Peter, Dessie, John and all the lads.
It has been a long season and the supporters have been very good travelling in large numbers to the games all year. This is the last game of the year and it would be nice to see a good crowd again in Pairc Sean on Saturday.
The Passing of a Great Gaels Man
The sad death of Oliver Regan has marked the loss of one of the greatest supporters of Melvin Gaels and indeed of the County. His colourful presence will be sadly missed at all the games. He was in fantastic form after the Intermediate Final win in Ballinamore on September 24th.
The Club extends sincere sympathy to Oliver’s wife Mae, all his Family and his many relatives and friends.
May He Rest in Peace

Second half heroics not enough for Melvin Gaels
0Melvin Gaels’ dreams of reaching a Connacht Final next weekend were dashed on Sunday last in Pairc Sean MacDiarmada after a hugely entertaining and absorbing contest with Mayo Intermediate champions, Davitts but the Kinlough men will be looking back on this game with plenty of regret.
Melvin Gaels 0-12
Davitts 1-12
Although they opened the scoring through David McSharry, Melvin Gaels were not up to speed in the opening half and trailed by seven points at the interval. Despite that deficit they re-emerged for the second half with a renewed focus and they dominated the remainder of the game. The Mayo men were unable to get near the ball in midfield as Melvin Gaels began to force their way back into contention. After moving from full-forward to midfield, brendan Brennan had a significant impact on proceedings while Peter McGowan and David McSharry were also causing all manner of problems for their opponents.
Melvin Gaels created numerous opportunities as they were practically camped in the Davitts half for the second but they were let down a combination of poor shooting, rash decision making and an outstanding block form Kevin Gallager to deny McSharry what seemed a certain goal.
At the other end the Davitts full-forward line were always dangerous whenever they were on the attack and the fact that all but one of their points came from that department gives an indication of their strength. The corner forwards, Aiden McTigue and in particular Michael Conroy were both good on the ball, very fast and deadly accurate in front of goal while full-forward Fergal McGrath, who was crowned man of the match was full of running. While his contribution in the second half may not have been as immediately evident, the manner in which he made life difficult for the Melvin Gaels’ defenders meant building from the back was a difficult task.
After David McSharry opened the scoring for Melvin Gaels it seemed as though the vocal home support may well be in for another special day but Davitts replied emphatically. Two aiden McTigue points gave the Mayo champions a fifth minutes lead before they struck decisively for what would prove to be the game’s only goal. Fergal McGrath and Keith Prendergast combined well to release Michael Conroy who finished confidently past Jess McGuinness.
That goal seemed to really deflate the Melvin Gaels players who now looked to be playing without the confidence that saw them dispatch Coolaney Mullinabreena in such emphatic style in the previous round. They did keep in touch with an Emlyn Mulligan free but at this stage of the game Melvin Gaels looked rattled and appeared guilty of showing their opponents too much respect.

Davitts do it their way once more
0Davitts 1-12
Melvin Gaels 0-12
Mike Finnerty
Carrick-on-Shannon
IF it’s action, drama, romance and excitement you want from your GAA experience these days, then you really should start following the fortunes of the Davitts footballers. Last Sunday, once again, they treated their travelling army of supporters to the full range of emotions before booking their place in next Saturday’s Connacht Intermediate championship final.
In the first half, Pete Warren’s team turned on the style to blitz Melvin Gaels and the half-time score told its own story; Davitts leading by 1-9 to 0-5.
It was a carbon copy of their first half performance in the recent County Final; the key positions were all under Davitts’ control, the ball was being moved at pace and with precision, and their inside forwards were on song. Michael Conroy gunned 1-5 before the short whistle while Fergal McGrath and Aidan McTigue each clipped two points from play. Outside them, Colm Boyle, Ronan McNamara and Paul Carey were masters of all they surveyed, while the half-forward line of Keith Prendergast, David McDonagh and Pat Coyle did the heavy lifting and link-work in equal measure.
Some of the moves and scores brought the words, ‘shock’ and ‘awe’ to mind. When McNamara drilled over a free to nudge Davitts into an eight-points lead soon after the restart, the outcome seemed set in stone. However, any thoughts of the second half being a victory parade for the South Mayo lads were quickly dispelled once the Leitrim champions got into their groove. Davitts seemed to ‘hit the wall’ soon after the restart and their opponents didn’t stand on ceremony as they tried to wipe out the deficit. With 58 minutes on the clock, just two points separated the sides. The Leitrim men were gaining with every stride and their partisan fans were in full voice. They had forced their way into contention on the back of three Emlyn Mulligan frees and wind-assisted points from distance from Martin McCarron, Stephen McGurran and Peter McGowan.
Davitts penchant for back-chat and making eye contact with the referee had also made Mulligan’s job a little easier at times, although the county forward did kick some uncharacteristic wides.
In the five remaining minutes though, Davitts dug deep and rallied to the cause. Men like Colm Boyle, Carlos O’Gara, Ronan McNamara and Aidan McTigue won some hard ball and did small things that made a big difference. The entire Davitts defence also closed ranks in the face of incessant Melvin Gaels pressure, and when a free was hard-earned at the other end, Michael Conroy lobbed the ball over the bar to put the issue to bed.
That insurance score brought his tally for the day to 1-7, but his two points in the last quarter of the game were invaluable. The first broke a Melvin Gaels run of three points without reply while his last gave Davitts some breathing space.
Melvin Gaels will have been in reflective mood on their journey back to Kinlough. They didn’t turn up in the first half, but if they had been more ruthless during their time in the ascendancy they could have upset the odds. Instead, a string of shots that dropped short and some bad option-taking let Davitts off the hook.
The winners set the tone in the first quarter and were six points up after fifteen minutes as their full-forward line of McTigue, McGrath and Conroy went to work.
A peach of a point on 90 seconds showed what kind of mood captain Conroy was in, and his goal on six minutes lit up the overcast afternoon.
Fergal McGrath and Keith Prendergast were involved in its creation but the finish was all Conroy; his right-footed shot flying past a startled Jess McGuinness on his near-post from eight yards.
Over the next 25 minutes, it was ‘total football’ from Davitts but there was plenty more twists and turns before the day was over.
