Senior League
The Senior League got under way in Melvin Park on Sunday when the Gaels took on Dromahair in the first Senior League game of 2013.
Despite a number of players missing through injury, the Gaels played some great football in the first half of the game, and went into the break two points ahead. In the second half with the wind behind them the Gaels failed to match the first half performance and missed a number of scoring chances, hitting the crossbar in the process. Credit to Dromahaire they made better use of the chances they had and finished a point ahead. Thanks to the Dromahaire team for applauding the Melvin Gaels team on to the pitch in recognition of winning the Senior Championship in 2012.
Next up for the seniors is a home game against Glencar/Manorhamilton on Sunday next.
The Juniors start off the League with a game away to Mohill on Saturday next.

While Donegal celebrated ecstatically following their recent All Ireland victory, the north Leitrim village of Kinlough was equally jubilant when their senior footballers took the Leitrim GAA senior championship for the first time in 14 years on Sunday, against neighbours Glencar/Manorhamilton on a score of 2-7 to 0-7 in Pairc Sean MacDiarmada, Carrick-on-Shannon.
There was a great welcome home for the victorious Gaels on Sunday evening as they arrived back after winning the title and depriving Manor of what would have been a fifth title on the trot. Large crowds turned out at Glenade and all the way as the victors toured through Kinlough and out to Tullaghan. There were also great celebrations at the local Community Centre; Kinlough itself was festooned with flags, bunting and the babble of excited children welcoming home their heroes. More than one blue and white flag was also to be seen in nearby Bundoran and Ballyshannon. There was also the irony that both Donegal clubs were playing in respective first round championship games, while the Gaels had already won a county title, but such is the story of ‘Sam’ success.
It has been a remarkable couple of years for the Gaels – an Intermediate championship title in 2011 followed by a senior title the following year is rare, if not unique in Gaelic football. For team manager Billy Gavigan it has also been an unprecedented success story. Not alone has he guided Melvin Gaels over the past two years; in 2010 he led Bundoran to their first Intermediate championship success since 1977.
Three championships in three years, in two counties, two provinces. A nice little notch on the belt. Mentors Liam Gilmartin and Aidan McGurran wealth of experience also ensured that the Gaels won their 7th senior championship which stretches back to 1959.
Billy said: “I just put them in the right direction, the experience I had from managing them before, I just put them in the right direction and they never looked back. The players have to do the work, they were willing to do it, they were willing to die for each other, so they were. You can only take a small, small bit of credit for the management because the players have to do the work for themselves.”
For Gaels player Thomas Lipsett also, it was particularly special as he married his sweetheart Donna Rogers in Rathmullan on Friday last, with many Mi-wadi’s consumed afterwards in the Silver Tassie Hotel. Winning years for the Gaels include 1959, 1960,1961,1962, 1965, 1998 and now 2012. And in winning the title, they brought an end to one of the greatest club runs ever in Leitrim, as Glencar/manor had won the title four years running in 2008,2009, 2010 and 2011 – another remarkable achievement in its own right.
As Prin Duignan said eloquently in Sunday’s match programme: “We hail these two great teams of the north, one of which seeks an honour never achieved before in Leitrim and either of which would grace Croke Park on St. Patrick’s Day and whether the Cup resides tonight near the Dartry hills between the Duff and the Drowes or makes its home again by the Bonet, Benbo and O’Donnell’s rock, let us salute the young men of this generation.”

Melvin Gaels whirlwind blows Champions away

Melvin Gaels players and supporters celebrate after last Sunday’s Connacht Gold Senior Championship Final in Carrick-on-Shannon. Photo by Willie Donnellan

They said they were coming for the Fenagh Cup a year ago and last Sunday, Melvin Gaels lived up to the promise as they not only dethroned their great rivals Glencar/Manorhamilton but ended their dream of five Connacht Gold Leitrim Senior Championship titles in a row in devastating fashion last Sunday in Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada.
Goals from James Phelan and Jesse McGuinness were the exclamation points on a Melvin Gaels victory founded on an incredible work-ethic and a ravenous desire to bring the Fenagh Cup back to Kinlough, a victory far more convincing than the two goal cushion they enjoyed at the final whistle.
The wild celebrations at the final whistle reflected just what this victory meant to Melvin Gaels, scenes that were reminiscent of 1998 when the Kinlough men won their first Senior title after a gap of 33 years.
If winning the Fenagh Cup brought to an end a famine long over-due with the talent in the Melvin Gaels ranks, the added bonus of taking the title off their greatest rivals and denying them an unprecedented five-in-a-row only served to heighten their ecstasy.
The buzz-words of work-rate, intensity, desire and team ethic are almost coaching cliché now, trotted out by any victorious team in the aftermath of a big win. But as clichéd as the words have become, they don’t lose their validity as the one word that sprung to mind was hunger.
That hunger was obvious from the steely gaze and fierce concentration of the Melvin Gaels players in the team photographs to the almost manic desire to regain possession in each and every sector of the field; the insatiable work-rate and ferocity in the tackle.
Yet as dominant as the Gaels were throughout last Sunday’s Senior decider, they came close to losing this game as they were unable to translate their dominance into scores and an almighty effort from Glencar/Manorhamilton closed the gap to just a point five minutes into the second half.
The fact that the Manor men were within touching distance of an unprecedented five-in-a-row probably means there will be as much talk about the former champions failings as Melvin Gaels performance in winning the crown but that is the nature of sport rather than a slight on the Gaels.
As Melvin Gaels mentors and supporters pointed out privately themselves in recent weeks, Glencar/Manorhamilton haven’t been playing well this year and they haven’t reached the heights they have shown in the past.
Whether that was four hard years catching up with them or a lack of hunger is hard to tell but at one stage, Melvin Gaels were very worried as their neighbours hit three unanswered points in as many minutes to leave just a point between the teams just six minutes into the second half.
As manager Billy Gavigan pointed out, the match was never truly safe for Melvin Gaels until Jesse McGuinness bundled the ball across the line with seven minutes to go and one wonders what would have happened had Glencar/Manor managed to draw themselves level.
Instead, we saw Melvin Gaels’ resolve at its finest – Glencar/Manor had the momentum, Aaron Hickey and James Glancy were causing enormous problems but with Paul and Brendan Brennan and Fabian McMorrow standing firm, the Gaels defence held out.
Instead, it was the former champions who buckled first – two Gary Loughlin kick-outs were horrible mis-cues and if the Gaels failed to take advantage of the first chance, then Peter McGowan exacted a heavy price with a fine individual point that killed Manor’s surge stone dead.
That Melvin Gaels resolve was evident in the manner in which they responded to the awful loss of captain David McSharry in the first half – their captain was causing huge problems for the Manor defence when he dislocated his knee in the first half, a terrible injury that could see the veteran out of action for some time.
But instead of demoralising the Gaels, they hit back immediately with their first goal when Emlyn Mulligan’s free came off the post and James Phelan, in his first start of the campaign, crashed a great shot to the Manor net.
That score, more than anything, displayed the belief and resolve that Melvin Gaels brought to the final and probably in the final analysis, it was hunger that proved the difference – not a lack of it on the part of Glencar/Manorhamilton but a ravenous desire to take the title that propelled Melvin Gaels to the title.
Paul Brennan deservedly won the man of the match award after a performance full of leadership and energy. When Melvin Gaels needed a move broken up or to get themselves moving, it was inevitably Brennan who got them moving, his presence leading the new champions with real authority.
In fairness, his brother Brendan wasn’t far behind and he seemed to single-handedly disrupt the Manor momentum in the middle of the field and his support play, seemingly everywhere on the field, was top class.
Fabian McMorrow too displayed his County credentials with a performance of real authority in the back-line even if James Glancy did give him moments of real worry. But McMorrow was a real steadying presence for a Kinlough defence that ensured that the vaunted Glencar/Manor attack never truly got going.
Up front, the Gaels would have ordinarily crumbled had they lost David McSharry and star man Emlyn Mulligan had one of his quieter days as he did last Sunday. Mulligan started in blistering fashion but once Paddy Maguire switched on to him, his influence waned.
Yet with James Phelan causing a real problem at full-forward, instead of the full-back position where he won his first Senior championship medal in 1998, the Gaels were always an attacking presence and their style of play, similar to Donegal, was not so much dependent on the individual but with working the ball to the best placed colleague.
Subs Peter McGowan and Jesse McGuinness had big impacts but the lingering image is of the incredible work-rate and intensity the Kinlough attack brought to hassling and harrying the Manor defence at every opportunity.
The game ended in a flurry of off-the-ball shoving and pushing and a few punches and James Glancy was fortunate to escape without a red card after an off-the-ball clash but the incidents were all symptoms of Glencar/Manor’s frustration and annoyance that they were losing their title to their great rivals.
The former champions will be hurt by the manner of their loss and if anything the sight of the Gaels celebrations will only serve to motivate them for what looks to be a rivalry that has the potential to dominate club football in the county for years to come.
McGuinness goal seals it for Gaels
The sides were level on two points a piece after eight minutes but Melvin Gaels points in the 14th and 16th minute from Brendan Brennan and Emlyn Mulligan had the defending champions on the back foot. Then in the 23rd minute a Mulligan free hit the upright and James Phelan was first to react finishing to the net. Glencar/Manor hit two pointed frees to leave Melvin Gaels 1-4 to 0-4 ahead at the break.
Mulligan extended the challengers’ lead with a pointed free two minutes into the resumption but Glencar/Manor responded with three but their fightback was short-lived as Melvin Gaels upped the pace scoring two points in the 44th and 50th minutes.
Substitute Jessie McGuinness proved to be the hero as he scrambled a loose ball to the net seven minutes from time to finish off the Glencar/Manorhamilton challenge and their hopes of a record breaking five in a row titles.
MELVIN GAELS: G Phelan; S Clancy, F McMorrow, S Ryan; P McGurrin, P Brennan, D Clancy; S McGurrin, B Brennan (0-1); C Sheridan, E Mulligan (0-3, two frees), C McGowan (0-1); J Connolly, J Phelan (1-1), D McSharry (capt). Subs: P McGowan (0-1) for D McSharry, J McGuinness (1-0) for J Connolly, C Regan for S Clancy, T Lipsitt for J Phelan.

Brennan plugs gaps to end 14-year Melvin title drought
MELVIN GAELS 2-07 GLENCAR/M’HAMILTON 0-07
Melvin Gaels bridged a gap of 14 years to capture the Leitrim title while denying neighbours Glencar/ Manorhamilton five-in-a-row in a game that failed to ignite at sunny Pairc Sean Mhic Diarmada.
Colm McGowan opened the scoring for Melvin Gaels with a point from play from the throw-in but the sides were level two points each after eight minutes.
The defending champions’ forwards failed to produce as the Melvin Gaels defence, marshalled by Fabian McMorrow and Man of the Match Paul Brennan, held firm.
Melvin Gaels regained the lead with a Brendan Brennan point in the 14th minute followed two minutes later by an Emlyn Mulligan point. Then in the 23rd minute a free by Mulligan hit a post and landed in the arms of James Phelan, who shot to the net to rock the defending champions. However, they recovered to score two pointed frees without reply to leave Melvin Gaels ahead 1-4 to 0-4 at half-time.
Mulligan extended the Melvin Gaels lead with a pointed free two minutes into the new half but the expected backlash came with three points in as many minutes from James Glancy (two) and an Aaron Hickey pointed free to leave just two points between the sides.
However, Glencar/Manorhamil-ton failed to maintain the momentum and points by substitute Peter McGowan and Phelan by the 50th minute plus James McGuinness’ late goal put Melvin Gaels out of sight.

Club Notes 05.08.2012
A Good Weekend
The Senior team had a great win over a good Mohill team in Ballinamore on Saturday evening last. They got off to a good start but Mohill came back and levelled. A Gaels penalty ensured they lead by a goal at the break, 1-08 to 0-08.
They controlled the second half and were worthy winners on a scoreline of 2-12 to 1-11.
On Sunday the second team took on Aughnasheelin in the Intermediate Championship and secured a good win on a scoreline of 3-6 to 0-11.
It was also good to see Colin Regan back playing Championship football after his serious injury. He made a very good contribution in the win over Aughnasheelin in Drumkeerin.
Well done to all concerned.

The Championship
The first team played Glencar/Manorhamilton on Saturday evening last in Pairc Sean and this turned out to be the usual close encounter. The first half was a very low scoring affair and the Gaels went into the break two points down (0-03 to 0-01) the second half was a bit better, the Gaels played a lot better and in the dying minutes led 0-07 to 0-05, but Glencar/Manor came back and levelled again. Both sides will feel they could have won the game, but draw was a fair result in the end.
The second team took on Cloone in the Intermediate Championship on Sunday and were always going to find it difficult. Nevertheless they put on a brave display and if they had been more accurate in front of goal it could have been a different story.
Final score was Cloone 2-07, Melvin Gaels 1-04.
Well done to both teams and the mentors.
