Club Notes 4th December 2003

Under 21 Champions

Sunday was a very historic day for the Melvin Gaels Club.  The under 21 team won the B Championship Final.  This was the first time the club have won an Under 21 Title in its forty nine year history.

This young team did it in style.  This was as good a second half display as I have seen from any Melvin Gaels team over a long number of years.

They defeated a very good Drumkeerin team in Carrick on Sunday afternoon and no doubt this will boost the confidence of the club in the coming years.

I know the term is regularly used to describe games of all codes but I don’t think I have ever seen a game of two halves divided as equally as this one.

Drumkeerin won the first half hands down.  They were the better team all over the field and deserved their lead of four points. Half time score was Melvin Gaels 1-0

Drumkeerin 1-4. Melvin Gaels had a few chances but failed to convert them.  Thomas Lipsett’s goal after 7 minutes being their only score.

The second half was a complete turn around with Melvin Gaels scoring 8 times and Drumkeerin scoring twice.

The final score was Melvin Gaels 3-6 Drumkeerin 1-6.

Melvin Gaels team and scorers:

Micharel McGowan, Adam Regan, Stephen Clancy, Kevin Kelly, Fabian McMorrow (0-1), Colm McGowan, B B Brennan (0-2), Paul McGurran (1-0), Joseph McGowan, David McSharry, Damien Sheridan (0-2), Thomas Lipsett (2-0) and Fergal Gallagher (0-1).

Subs: Bernard McGowan, Peter McGloin, Ciaran Curneen, Blaine Mulligan and Christopher Branley.

I don’t think it would be fair to single out any Melvin Gaels player for praise after this victory, so I just want to say that every player, including subs, performed exceptionally well.

Congratulations to Gareth Phelan who brought this team through a tough campaign in some difficult conditions. He deserves a lot of credit and while there never was any doubt about his football skills, I now think his Managerial skills have come to the fore as well – Well done Gareth.

Well done also to Dessie Sheridan who assisted Gareth . He covered an awful lot of ground along the sidelines in all these games.

Thanks to Padraig Rooney for doing the video and to the Village Inn for supplying the food on Sunday evening. Thanks also to the people who organised the welcome home for the team in Kinlough.

There was a great support at the game on Sunday and this was good to see. There were a lot of smiles after the game but I can tell you there were sad faces all round at half time.

Congratulations once again to all concerned.

Junior Division 4 League Final

This final will take place at the weekend against Allen Gaels.

Again this will be a tough game. It would be nice to get another victory.

All players are asked to turn out for a ‘get together’ this week. Dessie and Terry will arrange a time for this.

Good luck to this Junior team and their mentors Terry Tiffoney and Dessie Sheridan.
