Club Notes 12th April 2005

Senior League V Fenagh- St Cailins
On Saturday evening the Gaels had their first Senior League game against Fenagh at Melvin Park, Kinlough. Conditions were not conducive to good free flowing football but both teams did their best and produced a very entertaining encounter.

The first half was largely a one sided affair with Melvin Gaels going in at half time with a lead of 1-5 to 0-1. The strong breeze, which favoured Melvin Gaels, played its part. A brilliant goal from Gareth Foley was the highlight of the first half.

The second half began with Fenagh hitting four unanswered points. After this the Gaels settled down and defended from the front. There were many stars on the Gaels team on the evening and they finished strongly and almost scored another goal.

This was a very sporting game played in a good atmosphere and well refereed.

The final score was 1-7 to 0-7.

The Melvin Gaels team and scorers was: Gareth Phelan, Padraig Mc Gloin, James Phelan, Shane Mc Carron, Colm Mc Gowan, Fabian Mc Morrow, Joe Tiffoney, Colin Regan, Peter Mc Gloin, David Mc Sharry (0-3), Martin Mc Carron, Gareth Foley (0-2), Joe Mc Gowan (0-1) Paul McGurran, Thomas Lipsett (0-1)

Subs: Damien Sheridan, Larry Maxwell, Jessie Mc Guinness, Paul Mc Gowan, Simon Foley, Fergal Gallagher and Michael Tiffoney.

This was a good start to the league campaign and well done to all concerned.

Thanks to the Village Inn Kinlough for supplying sandwiches after the game.

Junior League V Eslin
The Melvin Gaels Juniors took on Eslin in Melvin Park on Sunday afternoon and suffered their third defeat in a row. The game ended on a scoreline of Eslin 1-11 Melvin Gaels 0-8.

The scoreline does not reflect the closeness of this game and had the Gaels been a bit luckier in front of goal in the second half they could have won it.

Five of the players who lined out on Sunday had taken part in the tough senior league game the evening before and it was not fair on them.

It’s a pity some more of the younger Under 21 players are not coming out to play junior football and gain some valuable experience. It’s going to be difficult for these players to break into senior football if they don’t get games with the juniors. There are enough players on the Junior panel to field a team without players who have played with the senior team.

It was a very good performance by the Gaels on the day and it is a credit to all who played their part.

The Melvin Gaels team and scorers was: Michael Mc Gowan, John Mc Gowan, Fabian Mc Gowan, Shane Mc Carron, Paul Mc Gowan, Joe Mc Gowan, Blaine Mulligan, Peter Mc Gloin (0-1), Michael Tiffoney, Damien Sheridan, Fergal Gallagher, Seamus Gallagher (0-2), Simon Foley, Gerry Mc Gurran (0-1) and Liam Gilmartin (0-4)

Subs: Aaron Phelan, Larry Maxwell, Kevin Corby, Sean Lipsett and Dermot Clancy.

Thanks to the Wellington Bar Kinlough for arranging sandwiches after the game.
