Senior Championship V Gortletterragh

Last Sunday week the Seniors travelled to Carrick and were narrowly defeated by Gortletterragh. This was a very close game throughout and the result was in doubt right up to the last minute. The Gaels played some good football and at times seemed to be on top, but as has been the case many times before they could not take their scores.

The final score was Gortletterragh 0-10 Melvin Gaels 0-8

The Melvin Gaels team and scorers was: Gareth Phelan, Padraig Mc Gloin, James Phelan, Matt Connolly, Paul Mc Gurran, Fabian Mc Morrow ( 0-1), Joe Tiffoney, Michael Tiffoney, Martin Mc Carron(0-1), Tom Lipsett, Damien Sheridan(0-1),Paul Mc Gowan, Colin Regan, Brendan Brennan(0-1), David Mc Sharry(0-4). Subs: Shane Mc Carron for Michael Tiffoney 43mins, Colm Mc Gowan for Tom Lipsett 55mins, Joseph Mc Gowan not used.

Senior Championship V Aughavas

The Senior Championship continues next Sunday 15th August when the Gaels take on Aughavas in Pairc Sean, Carrick on Shannon at 6pm.

Good Luck to all concerned.

The Late Robbie Kelly

Robbie Kelly died last week and made his last trip home to his native Kinlough.

Robbie was a native of Doobally, Kinlough and was a member of the very successful Melvin Gaels team of the 50’s and 60’s. Corner forward was his usual position and his brother Jimmy played in the right corner of the defence.

Robbie was educated in St Patrick’s College, Cavan and then took up employment with Dept of Post and Telegraphs in Dublin and later worked with the Dept. of Education.

Robbie remained faithful to his old club and with the other members of the club working in Dublin made the journey home for every game. The success that the Club enjoyed those years meant that the boys had to make the trip almost every fortnight.

Robbie was slightly built but never shirked a tackle or a challenge and was ready to help a team mate and to make his presence felt on the edge of the square.

The huge crowds that attended his funeral in Dublin and Kinlough were an indication of Robbie’s popularity. He was softly spoken and always good humoured.

The Melvin Gaels GAA Club extends sincere sympathy to his wife May and the other members of the Kelly family.

Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
