1999 League Cup Final (Bornacoola 0-13 Melvin Gaels 3-10) Picture of team

Last Saturday evening was very special for everyone involved with Melvin Gaels. The second team won the 1999 League Cup, beating a strong Bornacoola team by six points. This is the first competition the team has won since its formation in 1994 despite coming close on a few occasions. It is also the first cup of the New Millennium for the Gaels.

This game was a rematch of the Championship Semi-Final which Bornacoola won. They went on to win that competition outright. It was the second meeting of the two sides since that match with the Gaels winning the league fixture.

The game was much closer than the final score suggests. Gerry Mc Gurrin scored an excellent goal and points from Ciaran Clancy and Seamus Gallagher gave the Gaels a seven point lead at half time. The third quarter was all Bornacoola though as they scored eight unanswered points to go into the lead. It was obvious that something had to change because for much of the second half Bornacoola had dominated midfield. Ciaran Clancy was moved out to middle of the field and this proved to be a master stroke. Within a few minutes the Gaels scored two goals, one from sub Thomas Lipsett, and the other from Clancy although the keeper may have to ask himself a few questions because this was a 35 yard shot for a point! Brendan Mc Gurrin set up Lipsett for the goal with a "Beckham" style cross which was excellently fisted home. Another point from Clancy secured victory.

There was a great session on Saturday night when we returned to the village and I'm sure the heads are still sore today! Let's hope this is only the start of bigger and better things for the Gaels!
